Monmouthshire’s Trading Standards Officers Uncover ‘Dodgy’ Car Dealings

MonmouthshireA Dorset car dealer pleaded guilty at Newport Magistrates Court on March 31st to charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 following an investigation by Monmouthshire County Council’s trading standards officers.

John Oliver, a director of Canford Vehicle Services Ltd, admitted to four offences including engaging in a commercial practice that contained false information when advertising a vehicle as “in showroom condition inside and out”.  An enquiry by trading standards officers revealed that the car had suffered significant accident damage and repairs were of a poor standard leaving the vehicle in a potentially dangerous condition.

Magistrates fined Mr Oliver £400 for each offence and awarded the council £1,000 costs. The resident who reported the matter expressed his appreciation that the council’s trading standards department had investigated and pursued the case.  He added that he’d encourage others to report such matters.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Chief Executive Paul Matthews said: “This case illustrates the vital work that the council’s trading standards service undertakes to protect the public”.
