Over 45 vehicles have been seized during the ongoing Illegal Driver Campaign.
As part of the crackdown against those who drive whilst disqualified, drive with no insurance or drive without a valid driving licence, North Wales Police are out and about targeting those who flout the law.
One particular incident this week involved a 41-year-old man being arrested and charged with several offences including aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and no insurance.
The man was involved in a road traffic collision on the A499 at Clynnog Fawr where he was arrested.
Paul Stanley Griffiths was charged and remanded to appear before Holyhead Magistrates yesterday (Thursday 7th August) and he has since been remanded to appear before Caernarfon Magistrates on Thursday August 14.
During the week 47 vehicles have been seized under Section 165 of the Road Traffic Act. These include 37 uninsured vehicles, 5 unlicensed and 5 uninsured and unlicensed. Five people have been arrested relating to various driving offences.
PC Vincent Jones, who is leading on the campaign on behalf of North Wales Police’ Roads Policing Unit said: “We warned the public at the start of the operation that we would stop and seize vehicles found to be on the road illegally.
“Although the majority of drivers in North Wales are law-abiding, it is alarming that many choose to break the law, putting the lives of others at risk.
“Anybody found to be driving illegally can face being arrested. We will use all available powers to seize illegal vehicles and remove them from the roads. The consequences for them can be anything from a fine, to points on their licence to having their car scrapped.”
He added: “Many uninsured drivers use their vehicles to facilitate their illegal activities and denying them the use of the roads makes it harder for them to commit crime. We will work with people in our communities to help rid the roads of illegal drivers.”
North Wales Police has a robust strategy around enforcing the ‘Fatal 5’ offences which are drink and drug driving, dangerous driving including unnecessary risk taking, speeding, failing to wear a seatbelt and using a mobile phone whilst driving. These offences are also being looked at during the two-week campaign.
Members of the public are being encouraged to report a criminal if they suspect them to be breaking the law. Anybody with information should contact North Wales Police on 101 or Crimestoppers Wales anonymously on 0800 555 111.
