Extra Care for Crymych

Plans for a new care scheme for the elderly in North Pembrokeshire have taken a step forward.

At a meeting today Pembrokeshire County Council’s Cabinet gave the go head for land to be purchased that will enable an Extra Care Scheme to be built in Crymych.

It will be the third such scheme in the County – two other similar schemes have already been built at Merlin’s Bridge and Steynton.

In the Extra Care Scheme older people are provided with purpose built accommodation and are able to access support in their own homes in response to their changing care needs.

As well as the new Extra Care facility, the Crymych site will also include a Day Centre and also a new primary health care facility.

“Without a doubt this is the best good news story for North Pembrokeshire for a long time,” said Councillor David Wildman, Cabinet Member for Adult Services and Care.

“Older people have been telling us for a long time that they would prefer not to move to residential care but to receive services that would help them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. This Extra Care Scheme will help achieve this.”

Cabinet members were told on Monday that agreement had been reached with the owners of Crymych’s Mart Ground to buy the site for the proposed new facility.

The land will be sold to a Housing Association to develop the Extra Care and Day Care facility, and an area would be made available to the Hywel Dda Local Health Board for the new Primary Care facility.
