Benefits of Walking and Cycling

A drive is underway to encourage residents of Neath Port Talbot to make cycling and walking a part of their daily lives.

Neath Port Talbot Council has put together a strategy for the next four years which sets out to increase the awareness of the health benefits walking and cycling can bring as well as trying to change social attitudes toward walking and cycling.

This week, the strategy has gone out for consultation to gauge public opinion.

“The Council is committed to developing walking and cycling across the county borough,” says Council Leader, Ali Thomas.

“We want to promote the health benefits and improve facilities.

“Once we know what people think about the plans we can consider adopting a policy which residents and partners can sign up to.”

Research shows that residents of Neath Port Talbot do not take as much exercise as they should.

So, the Council wants to persuade more people to become active by encouraging them to take up walking and cycling.

Lots of opportunities are available in the county borough that tourists are already taking advantage of.

Improving and maintaining the walking and cycling network around Neath Port Talbot is one way the Council wants to tackle the initiative.

Another way is to encourage people to commute to work either walking or cycling which will bring both environmental and health benefits.
