Schoolchildren from throughout the Cynon Valley paid a visit to the major Aberaman Colliery reclamation scheme as part of their classroom projects.
The children from Cap Coch School in Abercwmboi and Oaklands Primary School in Aberaman visited the reclamation scheme which is being undertaken by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council in conjunction with the Welsh Assembly Government.
The construction work began at the end of 2009 and includes the removal of concrete slabs that covered the former coal stocking area and building new tracks with the crushed material.
There will also be the construction of a large culverts, improvements to existing drainage facilities and the creation of a series of new wetland ponds.
A total of 23 Year 6 children were welcomed at the site by council officers Andrew Stone and Richard Wistow who showed them the many interesting aspects of the scheme, especially the wetland ponds that will not only enhance the area but also create a location where future ecological mitigation works can be carried out.
The main reclamation scheme will require protected species of flora and fauna present on the site to be moved to a different location – hence the need for the advanced construction of the wetlands area to provide alternative habitats.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Housing Cllr Paul Cannon explained: “The Aberaman Colliery Reclamation Scheme is of massive importance to residents in this area of the Cynon Valley and I am pleased local school children are also being given an insight into the exciting work that is being undertaken there.
“The widespread vision for this area is exemplary and will transform a former industrial site into a lush green section of wildlife to be enjoyed by residents and visitors of Rhondda Cynon Taf alike.”
