Wales-based, UK and international theatre directors prepare to gather in Aberystwyth to contribute to, and participate in, The Directors’ Forum: The Six Senses of the Director curated and hosted by the Centre for Performance Research, 9 – 18 April 2010.
The Directors’ Forum: The Six Senses of the Director, comprises a series of three, three-day encounters designed to animate, articulate and illuminate the director’s craft and offers a unique occasion for exchange and development in a role that is often an isolated one.
Rather than a conventional diet of training exercises and workshops, The Forum instead offers pathways that allow small groups of directors to explore know-how, intuition and embodied practices via practical investigations in a safe and intimate atmosphere.
With programmes for directors’ exchange, development and training primarily geared to the needs of the ’emergent’ director, occasions for the exchange of the wealth of knowledge and experience of ‘mid-career’ directors and development opportunities are simply not available. In this context, and building on a previous strand of work in this area, CPR offers a rare opportunity for both emerging and established directors to meet, share, question and explore the methods, approaches and skills of professional directing, whilst also providing a platform to network with peer-groups and guest directors from around the World.
Guest Directors Include: Veenapani Chawla (Adishakti Centre, India), Das Beckwerk (Denmark), Jaroslaw Fret (Teatr ZAR, Poland), Richard Gregory (Quarantine, UK), Bill Hamblett (Small World Theatre, Wales), Natalie Hennedige (Cake Theatre, Singapore), Adrian Jackson (Cardboard Citizens, UK), Ruth Kanner (Ruth Kanner Theatre Group, Israel), Julian Maynard Smith (Station House Opera, UK), John McGrath (National Theatre of Wales), Philip McKenzie (Sherman Theatre Cymru), Anders Paulin (Sweden), Mike Pearson (Pearson/Brookes, Wales), Ralf Richardt Strøbech (Hotel Pro Forma/ Loop Group, Denmark), Tore Vagn Lid (Transiteatret-Bergen, Norway).
The concluding three-day encounter of the Forum – the Gathering – will draw together elements of the practical investigations of the previous days and pursue further presentational formats and practical enquiry with key speakers and international guests to create illuminating contemporary and historical perspectives on the director’s role and offer case studies from other nations that have echoes of the geographic, demographic and bi-lingual complexity of Wales. In particular, it will gather constructive proposals for future programmes of training and development within the theatre in Wales and the UK and enable a space for aspirational and inspirational vision.
The cost of participation in the Forum starts at £50.00.
