Traffic warning as abnormal load moves on Sunday

Swansea Council is working with local police and an expert haulage company to transport a giant transformer from Swansea Docks to the north of the city.

Abnormal Load Engineering Ltd (ALE) will be transporting the huge piece of equipment from Swansea Docks at 6am on Sunday April 11.

The transformer is 16-feet wide, 219-feet long and 15-feet high and weighs over 222 tons. It’s being transported to the Swansea North Sub Station located near to junction 46 of the M4 by Llangfelach.

It’s estimated the journey time will be four to five hours and will take a route along the A843 Fabian Way, the A4067 New Cut Road the B4489 Llangfelach Road to the final destination.

And to help the operation run smoothly, Swansea Council is working with the company and police to ensure the route is clear.

Carl Humphrey, Head of Highways in Swansea Council, said: “The transportation company carrying out the work has requested a number of street furniture items along the route to be temporarily removed to help the transportation of the transformer. Once the job is completed we will reinstall the street furniture.”

Police are advising motorists to take alternative routes whilst the transformer is being transported.
