Veterans of armed conflict across the world and across generations will be joining local dignitaries in Swansea on Sunday and Monday to honour the work of the British armed forces.
A special flag-raising ceremony and a service at St Mary’s Church in Swansea will remember the sacrifice of the country’s armed forces as part of British commemorations around British Armed Forces Day on June 26.
Lord Mayor Cllr Richard Lewis will be leading the events on behalf of the people of Swansea.
The flag-raising ceremony will take place at the Civic Centre in Swansea on June 21. And that will be followed by a special service at St Mary’s Church in the city on June 26.
The two events are designed to complement the UK Armed Forces Day celebration taking place in Cardiff on June 26.
Cllr Lewis said: “Cardiff has been chosen as the place where the attention of the whole UK will be focussed on June 26 for the main British Armed Forces Day events.
“But we in Swansea want to do our bit to remember the work, the commitment and the sacrifices of the British armed forces around the world every single day.
“I doubt there’s anyone who’s unaware of the importance of the mission in Afghanistan or the daily challenges, risks and sacrifices faced by our armed forces serving there.
“That’s why there will be a special flag-raising ceremony on Monday followed by the British Armed Forces Day Service at St Mary’s the following Sunday.”
Monday’s flag-raising ceremony outside the Civic Centre takes place at 10am and the Service takes place at 2.30pm the following Sunday.
