Midnight Rescue by Llandudno Lifeboat Crew

In a dramatic incident early yesterday morning (Thursday June 17) four Llandudno lifeboat crew members were instrumental in bringing to safety a man threatening self-harm.

The man had waded out from the beach at Rhos-on-Sea until he was chest-deep in the sea.

Called out by Holyhead Coastguard at 11.25 pm, the inshore lifeboat William Robert Saunderson was launched from the Aberhod slipway at Rhos with a crew of three, and made a slow approach to the man from seaward.

The crew then spent some time chatting with him to persuade him to return to the shore, without success.

A fourth RNLI crewman wearing a drysuit then waded out to the scene, and he and his colleagues managed to grab hold of the man whilst the helmsman slowly drove the lifeboat shorewards until the shallows were reached.

At this point the crew were joined in the water by a Coastguard and RNLI shore crew members who helped them to land the man on the beach. He was then handed over to waiting ambulance crew and police.

The lifeboat returned to Llandudno by road to be refuelled and readied for further service; this operation was completed by 2.30 am.
