Regulating the county’s tattooists and piercing businesses

A seminar took place in Denbighshire earlier this month which provided guidance to tattooing and piercing businesses in the county on how to practice safely and comply with safety regulations.

The seminar was part of a work programme being undertaken by Denbighshire County Council’s Public Protection team whereby all tattoo and piercing premises will be visited to assess whether safety and infection control standards are being maintained.

Local authorities are responsible for the regulation and control of businesses carrying out acupuncture, tattooing, semi-permanent skin colouring, cosmetic piercing and electrolysis.

Under legislation, councils require businesses that carry out these kinds of procedures to register themselves and to observe byelaws for securing the cleanliness of premises, operators and equipment.

The council will soon be consulting with the public on new by-laws relating to the operation of tattooing, cosmetic piercing, acupuncture and electrolysis operations. These by-laws will set out specific conditions that operators will have to comply with to ensure that these activities are carried out as safely as possible.
