The new Monmouthshire Sir Fynwy daffodil has been celebrated by people on Twitter with a number of short poems.
Followers of Monmouthshire’s Twitter updates were asked to send Monmouthshire County Council daffodil poems in one tweet. That means each entry was tweeted and was 123 characters or fewer (@monmouthshirecc + poem).
The daffodil celebrates the county’s Welsh heritage and was specially selected and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society.
Bob Greenland, Deputy Leader of Monmouthshire County Council, said:
“The Monmouthshire daffodil will grace our roadsides and be in people’s gardens and on our hillsides. And it will also be grown around the world, a little piece of our beautiful county, looking out at Wales and the rest of the world.
“We were really pleased that our Twitter followers have come up with some terrific poems to honour our daffodil and the ten best poems will be sent their very own bulb.”
Communications Officer, Helen Reynolds, who updates the Twitter page for the authority, said:
“We wanted to give people a chance to celebrate our new daffodil with a short poem. People on Twitter were really supportive, with lots of people helping by retweeting details of the competition to their followers and joining in a bit of fun to get us talking about our county.
“The Monmouthshire Sir Fynwy daffodil was generously sponsored by a local firm, Camelot IT.
“We’d also like to thank everyone who entered and helped to spread the word on Twitter.
“There are only a few bulbs at the moment but when the bulb becomes available to buy we will list the stockists on the council website.”
