Material girls hold exhibition in Civic Centre

Over 30 material girls from Gorseinon are putting on a colourful exhibition at Swansea’s Civic Centre.

The members of Itchy Fingers Textiles now have their work on display in the main exhibition area on the ground floor until October 1.

The exhibition is called First Time Out and is being launched on Wednesday September 8 by Audrey Walker MBE.

Mrs Walker is an internationally-renowned textile artist who’s a former Head of Embroidery and Textiles at Goldsmith’s College in London. She’s exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the past and has also worked with organisations like the Crafts Council and the Arts Council of Wales.

Itchy Fingers formed after members took the Machine Embroidery Class at Gorseinon College and wanted to continue creating textile pieces with tutor Enid Davies.

The Civic Centre exhibition will include textile banners measuring three metres tall at the entrance.

Among the Itchy Fingers group is professional ceramic artist Sheila Jones and Robi Thomas- an Embroiderers Guild in Wales prize-winner.

Fellow member Alice Kettle and tutor Enid have also already exhibited wonderful examples of their work.

Enid said: “We wanted to share with people what we’re capable of doing and we hope that everyone will enjoy seeing our work as much as we have enjoyed creating it.”
