Newport welcomes new Director

Newport City Council has to announced the appointment of Mr Alasdair Bovaird as Corporate Director (Young People and Performance).

Mr Bovaird replaces Ms Tracey Lee following her appointment as Managing Director.

With a career in local government spanning twenty years, Mr Bovaird has extensive experience in areas such as partnership working, community engagement, organisational change and service improvement, which will prove invaluable as Newport enters a crucial time of change.

Councillor Matthew Evans, leader of the council, said of the appointment: “We have a clear direction and know where we want our city to be in the next few years. Mr Bovaird has demonstrated both an appreciation of our vision and most importantly, the skills and experience to help drive this authority forward.”

Most recently, Mr Bovaird has acted as a strategic advisor to public sector organisations and bodies. He has also held senior positions in both English and Scottish local government including Chief Executive of Uttlesford District Council and Head of Corporate Policy at Argyll and Bute Council.

Some of the key achievements and projects within his career have focussed on innovative ways of working, modernising service delivery and improving public consultation and communication.

Mr Bovaird said of his appointment: “I am delighted to be joining Newport at what is clearly an important turning point for the council and city. I look forward to working with a committed team of politicians and officers and will employ my skills to ensure Newport builds upon its achievements.”

Ms Tracey Lee, Managing Director, added: “Newport has an exciting future ahead, but we are not without our challenges. We were looking for, and have found a strong candidate who can support us in making changes that will benefit the people of Newport.”

Outside work, Mr Bovaird is a keen sportsman. He was previously 1st XV front row for Hertford RFC and is currently the captain and chairman of Wendens Ambo RFC.

Mr Bovaird currently lives in Essex and will be relocating to the area. He is expected to take up post with Newport City Council in mid November.
