Revamp of the Tower Gardens steps in Holywell

The steps at the end of Tower Gardens in Holywell have recently seen a major revamp, thanks to the efforts of the Holywell Town Partnership.

The Town Partnership, which was established in September 2009, has used town centre regeneration funding received from Flintshire County Council to pay for a major renovation of the steps.

Holywell Town Council had expressed concern for some time about the safety of the steps, particularly in bad weather, and the need for improvements. The partnership took on board these comments and were also mindful of the importance of the steps as a key pedestrian route into the town centre.

Cllr Matt Wright, County Council Executive Member for Regeneration and Tourism said:

‘’As well as thinking about the longer term future of our town centres, these small scale but highly visual projects are important too and help improve the customer and visitor experience’’.

Works undertaken include total renovation and replacement of the steps themselves, new pavings at the top of the steps, and the addition of a central handrail to both flights of steps. The underpass ceiling has also been re-painted and the mural cleaned up. The works also complement some improvements to the soft landscaping next to the ramp, which was completed earlier this year.

Cllr Peter Curtis, Town Mayor and Vice Chair of the Town Partnership said:

‘’The Town Council welcomes the joint approach working together to improve our town and hope that it may continue. Further improvements to this vital pedestrian link are also still to be added; in the next few weeks there will also be signage above the underpass, directing pedestrian visitors to the top of the Greenfield Valley on leaving the town centre, and directing shoppers and visitors into the Town Centre from the Tesco car park’’.

Stephen Hughes, Chair of Holywell Town Partnership added:

‘’The Town Partnership includes representatives from local businesses, community organisations and the Town and County Councils. Working together on a whole host of projects and initiatives is in the interest of all and is key to the future sustainability of the town. More people who want to actively contribute to the future of the town are always welcome to join the Town Partnership’’.
