The final chapter in the process of transferring Harlech Swimming Pool from the control of Gwynedd Council has been completed.
The keys were handed over to representatives of the local community trust on 1 December, heralding the start of a new chapter in the history of the popular facility.
This follows months of work by the local group, supported by Gwynedd Council. Thousands of pounds of funding have been secured to allow the pool to remain open, including £300,000 from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Community Facilities and Activities Programme and £800,000 of Lottery funding.
Gwynedd Council Leader, Councillor Dyfed Edwards, said:
“I am delighted that the keys to Harlech swimming pool have finally been handed over to the local group. The people of Harlech told us that they wanted to see this facility remain open and I am delighted that all the hard work and perseverance has finally paid off.
“The success of this project shows what can be achieved when local people, Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Assembly Government work together to find new solutions to the challenges that we face.
“Not only has the Council been able to support the local trust group to work on their business plans and to secure the necessary funding, but also has kept the pool open in the meantime.”
