Executive Give Go Ahead for Welsh Medium Nursery at Ysgol Glan Morfa

Cardiff Council’s Executive has approved the establishment of a Welsh-medium nursery at Ysgol Glan Morfa from January 2011.

Following the publication of statutory notices to extend the age range of the school from 4-11 years to 3-11 years to which there were no objections, the Executive gave officers the go ahead to implement the proposal at their meeting on Thursday, December 2.

The proposal will enable children of nursery age to receive education at the school followed by transfer into a reception class in the following September. The admission of pupils into the school’s reception class will continue to be administered in accordance with the Council’s published admissions criteria.

The nursery will be established as a 24 part-time place nursery unit at Ysgol Glan Morfa, operating for one two-and-a-half hour session a day, five days a week during term-time.

A full public consultation took place in May on the proposal which seeks to meet the increasing demand for Welsh-medium nursery places in the Splott area of the city.

Ysgol Glan Morfa was established as a Welsh-medium starter class in 2005 and was permanently established in part of the premises that were formerly part of Moorland Primary School as of September 2007.  Numbers on roll have increased steadily.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said:”Since the opening of Ysgol Glan Morfa, there has been a commitment from the Council to consult on the establishment of a Welsh-medium nursery unit at the school and these plans reflect this commitment.

“The new nursery will further enhance the educational opportunities for local children and meet our aspiration of creating all-through primary schools, catering for children aged three to 11.

“I’m delighted that we are now able to offer and meet demand for quality nursery education through the medium of Welsh in this area of the city.”
