Have your say on the West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme

Denbighshire and Conwy Councils are considering a planning application for upgrading coastal defences in West Rhyl.

Members of the public and interested parties are being invited to have their say on the proposals for a £10.6million coastal defence scheme off the coast of Rhyl which, if given the go ahead, will save thousands of homes and businesses from the threat of flooding from a ‘one in 200 year event’ – a standard design guideline.

The applications and environmental statement are available to view at the Rhyl Library and have been displayed in the White Rose Shopping Centre. They can also be viewed at Denbighshire’s Caledfryn office in Denbigh during normal office hours.

The documentation will be available until the end of January 2011. Please note that due to the refurbishment work being carried out at Rhyl Library, the documents are behind the counter so please ask a member of staff if you wish to see them.

The existing defences along the Rhyl coast vary in design and age with the oldest being around 110 years old and the most recent some 60 years old.

The current promenade retaining wall to the east of the Foryd Bridge and the training wall to the east of the River Clwyd channel are displaying signs of fatigue, which could potentially lead to a breach, causing extensive flooding in Rhyl.

In addition to the proposed engineering works, local residents can, by taking simple steps, reduce the extent of damage to their property. This project will engage the local community to enhance public resilience to flooding.

In 2008, Welsh Assembly Government successfully bid for £30 million of European Convergence Funding for a Strategic Flood and Coastal Risk Management Project.

To deliver the Project, WAG invited proposals for schemes and in January 2009, Denbighshire County Council was informed that their bid for the West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme had been successful. Martin Wrights Associates, coastal and flood risk management engineers, were awarded the contract.
