John Hartson is backing Macmillan Cancer Support’s Change Cancer Care Today campaign. The former Welsh international footballer pledged his support to the campaign, which was launched in Cardiff with the screening of a new film featuring the experiences of a couple affected by cancer in Wales.
Macmillan Cancer Support says it wants to ensure that everyone diagnosed with cancer in Wales gets the support they need. It is calling for a national cancer strategy that puts people at its heart
The thought provoking film entitled ‘The Journey’ tells the story of Peter Thomas and his wife Fiona after he was diagnosed with cancer.
It was premiered at a special screening at the Wales Millennium Centre hosted by John Hartson, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2009.
John Hartson is encouraging everyone in north Wales to watch the film.
He said:
“This film illustrates the difficulties experienced by people affected by cancer and what can be done to better support them. In Wales today there are more than 100,000 people like me that are affected by cancer. I know that improved treatment means that more and more people are living longer but this means that we need better support.

“Both Peter and John have experienced the devastating impact cancer has had on their lives. They understand the need for not only world class medical care but also wider support. This film explains the changes that are needed to help support people like them all over Wales. We want as many people as possible to see this film so they understand how vital a cancer strategy is to improving the lives of people living with cancer.”
