Police Issue Safety Warning after Power Cables Damaged

Police are issuing a safety warning following power cables being cut at a sub station site on Chapel Lane, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran.

The damage was reported at 10.30pm last night, Wednesday 2nd February.

Officers believe that attempt was being made to steel the copper cables to sell on as scrap metal.

This type of criminality is extremely dangerous. These cables carry a high voltage of electricity and tampering with them could result in serious, if not fatal, injuries.

Police officers conducted a search of the area last night and enquiries are continuing this morning.

Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area yesterday evening is asked to contact police on 01633 838111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

William Graham – Conservative AM for South Wales East – commenting on the damaged power cables told us:

“People should be aware that any tampering with power cables has potentially fatal consequences and they should heed this warning”.

“I share the views expressed in the Argus editorial last November after a previous attempt to steel power cables – ‘we cannot understand why anyone would want to put their own lives at risk in order to steal’.

“A 43 year old man from Bettws, Newport, was electrocuted in April 2008 whilst attempting to steel cooper cable from a substation on the Panteg steelworks site”.

“These thoughtless thefts can also result in power cuts; affecting innocent, vulnerable people in surrounding residential and business areas”.
