S4C children’s series Y Diwrnod Mawr has been nominated for an award in the Children’s Category at the RTS Programme Awards.
The series has been nominated for the programme featuring five year old Pentrefoelas boy Siôn Pyrs. Y Diwrnod Mawr (The Big Day) is part of S4C’s Cyw service and produced by Ceidiog Productions, follows children on an important day in their lives.
The awards ceremony will be held on 15 March at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
The nominated programme follows Siôn Prys as he prepares for his big day when he takes his lamb, John Parry, to sell at Rhuthin Market. Other programmes in the series feature a girl preparing to welcome her mother home after serving as an Army nurse in Afghanistan and a go-cart mad boy preparing to compete for the first time.
Sian Eirian, S4C’s head of Childrens Services says: “Y Diwrnod Mawr is a pioneering Welsh series which offers young children a taste of factual and documentary programmes – programmes that offer memorable and sometimes evocative experiences. This nomination adds to the host of honours that the Y Diwrnod Mawr has already received and proves that S4C’s investment in children’s programming has been a great success and it has made a substantial contribution to the Welsh language and cultural life in Wales.
“It is a national recognition of what S4C and its programme-makers in Wales are achieving and it reflects our commitment to broadcasting children’s programming of the highest quality.”
The series, which broke new ground in television with the first-ever series of documentaries for nursery school children, has already won international recognition with Celtic Media Festival, BAFTA Kids UK and Rose d’Or nominations.
