Residents in Pentrebane are organising a community away day to an amusement park when Prince William and Kate Middleton marry – to avoid from the wall-to-wall coverage of the marriage of the Royal Wedding.
More than 100 people have signed up for the trip to Oakwood in West Wales on Friday, April 29th.
Ward councillor Neil McEvoy, who is leader of the city’s Plaid Cymru group, said: “The idea was suggested a few weeks ago and agreed at a meeting of the Pentrebane Residents Association last week.
“Residents decided to organise a coach trip on the day of the Royal Wedding and call it The Get Away From It Trip. We’ll be taking two coaches and they’re almost full already. We’re keen to build community spirit in the area and I’m sure this away day will help bring people together.
“I think well before the day of the Royal Wedding many people will have had their fill of the hype surrounding it and residents thought a day away would be a great idea. Everyone is looking forward to a fun day out and we’ll be turning off the TV and radio.
“Although, I’m a republican and annoyed that the tax-payer is having to pick up a huge multi-million pound bill for security, I’ve got no problem with royalists celebrating and organising street parties if that’s what they want. I just don’t want to be party to it.”
Councillor McEvoy, who is also Cardiff council’s Deputy Leader, said that council officers had estimated the staffing costs to the authority of the UK Government’s decision to make April 29 a bank holiday at around £900,000. “With all the spending cuts that have to be made it is something we could have well done without.”
