Torti, a 50 year old tortoise has been returned to his owner safe and sound after being rescued by Cardiff Council’s waste collection unit.
The cherished pet belonging to Peter Brown, went missing from his home in Rhiwbina on Monday.
Peter and Torti have been friends ever since Peter won his little companion at a school fate by landing a ping-pong ball in a jar back in 1966.
The unusual disappearance sparked fears that Torti may have been removed from Mr Brown’s garden.
However this Thursday (14 July) an attentive Council worker collecting waste from the area, spotted the tortoise walking along a neighbouring street.
After several sleepless nights of worry for his owner and reports made to the RSPCA and South Wales Police, Torti has been successfully returned and is sure to be given plenty of TLC.
In 2008 Cardiff Council’s waste collection unit also rescued another special tortoise from the Council’s recycling facility.
Welsh Actress Ruth Jones, star of hit TV show Gavin and Stacey lost her beloved tortoise Tom after he climbed into a recycling bag and was transported by a recycling vehicle. Tom was rescued when an eagle eyed employee spotted the reptile on the conveyor belt.
Executive Member for the Environment, Cllr Margaret Jones said: “I am delighted that Torti has been found in good health.
“Our employees have been eagle-eyed and efficient to ensure this much loved little pet can return home where he belongs.”
