South Wales Police can confirm the woman who died as a result of a road traffic collision on the A465 at Gurnos on Monday afternoon, is 26 year-old Philippa Evans.
Philippa had recently transferred to Solihull where she completed a term as a teacher at Arden High School. Her parents and two brothers, who she was visiting at the time of the collision, reside in the Merthyr area and have paid the following tribute to her:
“Philippa was a deeply spiritual and intellectual fun loving girl who conducted herself with integrity in all life’s opportunities and endeavours. She took great pleasure in educating young people’s minds and will be sorely missed by her family and all who knew her and by the students and colleagues at Arden High School in Solihull.”
Officers investigating the collision are appealing for witnesses to the incident which occurred at 4.55pm on Monday 1st August 2011 on the A465 at Gurnos, Merthyr Tydfil.
A Silver Mitsubishi Colt motor car driven by the 26 year-old was travelling west along the A465 in the general direction of Merthyr when it collided with a black Mercedes E220 motor car, driven by a 53 year old male, travelling in the opposite direction east along the A465.
The driver and passenger from the Mercedes were taken to hospital suffering from multiple injuries and shock. Their injuries are not serious.
Officers are appealing for any witnesses to contact them, and specifically to anyone who was at the scene following the incident but did not provide their details.
The carriageway was closed for approximately 4 hours whilst the police conducted initial investigations.
