Fishguard RNLI’s inshore lifeboat (ILB) with three volunteer crew was launched on Saturday 6 August at 1.30pm in response to a ‘999’ call made to HM Coatsguard.
A 14 foot aluminium boat had drifted onto the rocks at Needle Point on the north side of Dinas Head after both its outboard engines had failed. Fortunately conditions were calm and the three occupants were able to keep fending off the rocks until the ILB was quickly on scene. They also had the presence of the fishing boat ‘Kingfisher’ which kindly stood by to render assistance if the situation deteriorated. A tow line was attached by the ILB and the ‘tinny’ was towed to the safety of Cwm-yr-Eglwys beach.
On Monday 8 august both Inshore and all-weather lifeboats were called out after A ‘999’ call was received by a member of the public to report a canoeist as missing. The lifeboats were launched at 1pm. After a short search of the area between Newport Sands and Cwm-yr-Eglwys the canoeist was spotted a half mile due north of Aberfforest. The middle-aged man was somewhat perplexed at the arrival of both lifeboats but admitted to be struggling in difficult conditions and a strong westerly wind – and no spraycover. He was taken aboard the all-weather lifeboat and delivered to Cwm-yr-Eglwys and met by HM Coastguards.
