Changing the Way Cardiff Collects Food Waste

With major changes to the way Cardiff Council collects recycling and food waste in the City just days away, we are keen that all citizens are fully aware of how the changes will affect them from September 12th.

The majority of Cardiff residents will have a change of collection day and recycling and food waste will now be collected weekly with black bin/bag and garden waste being collected on alternate weeks.

Food waste collection is a key part of the changes that will see Cardiff become a truly sustainable city.  Each household will have received a brown kerbside caddy by September 12th in addition to the green kitchen caddy and using it couldn’t be simpler:

  • Line your kitchen caddy with the liners provided and fill with food waste, removing all packaging and containers
  • When the liner is full, tie it closed and put it into your larger brown kerbside food waste caddy designed to be stored outside
  • Place your kerbside food caddy on the pavement every week  for collection on your new collection day

Kerbside caddies will make getting rid of your food waste a cleaner and easier process, preventing animals from accessing food waste and reducing litter from split bags.

Our education team has been out and about meeting and greeting residents, giving out information as well as extra liners and bags with Caddy Man often making an appearance.  The response has been excellent with many residents reporting they are aware of what they need to do come 12th September.  However, it’s not too late to meet the team as the following extra dates have been arranged.

  • Wed 7th – Canton Library  2 – 5pm
  • Thurs 8th – Rhiwbina Library  2 – 4pm
  • Fri 9th – Cooperative Store Canton
  • Sat 10th – City Centre Roadshow 10 – 4pm, by Capitol (with Caddy Man)
  • Sunday 11th – Riverside Food Festival 10 – 2pm (Caddy Man may also appear)

Cllr Margaret Jones, Executive Member for Environment said, “Disposing of our food waste has been a central consideration when implementing the new recycling and waste collection changes.  We have had containerised food waste for some time but this system is even easier as we urge everyone to reduce, re-use and recycle.  I thank Cardiff residents for their help with the changes that will see great benefits for our City .  If used properly, the kerbside caddy system will greatly reduce food waste from split bags spilling onto the streets due to pests as there is absolutely no need to place any food waste in the black bags any more.  If anyone has any queries or problems please contact C2C on 2087 2087 or go online at www.cardiff.gov.uk/waste for full details of these very important changes.”
