Commenting on the launch of the Welsh Government’s consultation on easing congestion along the M4, Shadow Minister for Transport Byron Davies AM said:
“This is quite some U-turn following the Labour-led government’s decision to scrap an M4 relief road in 2009.
“We have always said that was a terrible decision and I am pleased that our voices, along with those of business leaders and locals across the region, have finally been listened to.
“Many millions of pounds was spent on that project before it was scrapped. Now, quite rightly, this issue is back on the agenda and I wholeheartedly welcome that. I now urge the Welsh Labour Government to manage the progress of these developments appropriately and infinitely better than they did last time.”
William Graham, Assembly Member for South Wales East, said:
“I have long called for renewed efforts to ease congestion along this stretch of the M4 and I am pleased that the Welsh government has finally decided to revisit this crucial issue.
“The Chancellor made it clear in his autumn statement that this was a matter he would work with the Welsh Government on and that remains incredibly welcome.
“I remain disappointed and frustrated that so much money was wasted on the Welsh Government’s scrapped relief road project. Nevertheless, I – along with many local residents and businesses – welcome the fact that developments are on the horizon at long last.”
