Monmouthshire County Council to Help with Lower Power Bills

MonmouthshireMonmouthshire County Council has joined a scheme that can help its residents switch to a cheaper power supplier. Although consumers can change gas and energy suppliers to get better deals, the “CYD Cymru” scheme, which is promoted by the Welsh Government, gives people the opportunity to sign up to a collective scheme through “collective switching”. This enables those who sign up to the scheme to benefit from large, bulk buy scheme discounts.

People can sign up to the scheme on the following web page:

Cllr Phil Hobson, Cabinet Member with responsibility for energy policy, said:

“These are tough times and as a council we have been doing what we can to help keep people’s living costs down. Collective switching is a great way to do that, which is why we’re helping people to sign up for CYD Cymru. The deadline for this particular grouping is 16th December.”

Collective Switching is where groups of people club together to switch utility supplier. The larger the group the more attractive the proposition for the energy companies and in theory the better the tariff that can be negotiated for the consumers. Both Electricity and Gas can be renegotiated, but at present oil can’t be. MCC’s Sustainability Team are exploring this, as the county has a high number of off gas grid homes.

Although other schemes around the country have delivered savings of between £60 and £250 per household, not everyone will see a saving. So we would advise people to check on other sites for a better deal before proceeding.
