Labour leader Ed Milliband received an early Christmas present this week – a book on the history of the South Wales Miners’ Library.
Aberavon MP Hywel Francis, Emeritus Professor in History and Classics at Swansea University, co-edited the book with the head of the library, Sian Williams.
Called Do Miners Read Dickens? the book draws on the library’s extensive collection on life in coalfield communities over the years to mark its 40th anniversary.
Do Miners Read Dickens? The Origins and Progress of the South Wales Miners’ Library, 1973-2013 by Dr Hywel Francis and Sian Williams, is published by Parthian, and is available to buy for £15 from the South Wales Miners’ Library in Hendrefoelan.
