The annual Moelfre Lifeboat day held on Saturday, August 14 has been hailed as a massive success after raising a magnificent £7,000 for the RNLI – with more money still due to be donated over the coming weeks.
Nine to ten thousand people crowded into the small village to enjoy the various stalls and activities. Hundreds of people were escorted by the volunteer crew around the lifeboat station, the all-weather lifeboat Robert and Violet, and Enfys, the station’s inshore lifeboat.
Both lifeboats were launched along with the RNLI capsize training inshore lifeboat which demonstrated the RNLI capsize and re-righting procedures. The crowds were treated to a winching exercise between the Moelfre lifeboats and the RAF search and rescue helicopter from Valley, followed by a fly past by the Wales Air Ambulance, which fortunately was in the area.
The volunteer crew were called into action to deal with two emergency rescues during the display. The crew were called to assist a boat in difficulties off Cemaes, and then to a medical emergency to evacuate a sick Indian seaman off a Tanker off Point Lynas.
Moelfre RNLI Lifeboat Press Officer, Dave Massey, said:
‘The Moelfre Lifeboat day is a really important event in the village, and always raises vital funds for the RNLI. As a registered charity the RNLI relies on voluntary donations to enable its volunteer lifeboat crews to continue saving lives at sea. Everyone at the Moelfre RNLI Lifeboat Station are tremendously grateful, and would like to thank all the carnival committee and volunteers for their dedication and hard work in organising such a successful and popular event, and of course, the continued support and generosity of the general public’.
