MP for Clwyd West, David Jones, has welcomed the news of a 10-year deal between Royal Mail and the Post Office, securing the future of services for thousands of local communities.
The deal will safeguard local services, and is in contrast to the Labour party’s closures programme, during its time in Government.
The Government has implemented a variety of measures to protect Post Office services, including: additional funding; new local and national contracts; a successful piloting scheme to transform many local post offices; and improvements to the services offered.
David Jones said:
“The Government has delivered on its promise to protect the Post Office from future closures.
“I have campaigned for a number of years, alongside many constituents, to stop Labour’s closures programme. Nevertheless, a large number of local post offices were closed during their time in government. Post Offices continued to deliver valued services and local people will be delighted by the Government’s announcement.
“Labour’s cuts to Post Offices saw the closure of over 6,500 offices in a decade. The Government’s announcement means that the future of the Post Office is now more secure, and will protect this valuable service for millions of people across the United Kingdom.”
