All the garden and food waste Gwynedd Council collects from the brown bins in properties in the Dwyfor and Meirionnydd areas is turned into high quality compost in the Council’s innovative composting facility at Ffridd Rasus near Harlech.
Following intense monitoring and testing, the Council has secured the coveted PAS100 standard which means that the Council can market it as compost.
As thanks for the support of Gwynedd residents to the campaign to reduce the percentage of waste sent to landfill and to note National Recycling Week 2010 (21 – 26 June), the Council will be offering the compost back to residents as part of the scheme. The first cycle will take place at the Ffridd Rasus recycling centre in Harlech on the weekend of 26 and 27 June. The aim is to hold similar composting events in Gwynedd’s recycling centres over the next few months.
Householders are welcome to come to the recycling centre near Harlech on Saturday, 26 June between 10am and 4pm and between 10am and 2pm on Sunday, 27 June to pick up compost for their garden in up to four of their own bags. The Council’s recycling officers will be on-hand during the day to offer general information and advice about reducing waste, recycling and composting.

“As a Council, we are committed to reducing the tonnes of waste sent to landfill, and therefore the success of recycling and composting schemes is key and we must thank local residents for their support to the brown bin campaign.
“This opportunity for residents to come to the Council’s recycling centre at Ffridd Rasus is a way for us to thank the people of Gwynedd for their efforts in using the brown bins to dispose of their food waste and garden waste.
“The fact that the facility has reached the PAS100 standard is excellent news and shows that the circle is complete as food and garden waste goes from the brown bin to the Council’s recycling centre and then back onto the land.
“On 26 and 27 June, residents are welcome to come to the Ffridd Rasus centre with their own bags and receive a supply of high quality compost. It’s the ideal time to get cracking in the garden.”
