A Stitch-in time at the Orangery Margam Park

NPT community groups and schools were out in force on Sunday to support the Big Big Stitch In! at The Orangery, Margam Park.

The successful event organised and produced by NPT Community Arts brought together volunteer sewing groups and individuals throughout Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council to stitch together approximately 80 textiles pieces designed and handcrafted by members of the community, schoolchildren and volunteer organisations for use in the National Theatre of Wales live production of the Passion over the Easter weekend.

Sewer Val Bernie from Helping Hands Knitting Group Neath Abbey said, “It has been a great day and was great to meet sewers from other groups. We all worked together with great community spirit and made lots of new friends and contacts.”

The pieces were then sewn together by a group of over 20 dedicated volunteers to make two enormous quilts. Plenty of refreshments were provided on the day to ensure the hardworking team of ladies were able to keep the sewing machines rolling and on track.

Hollywood actor Michael Sheen dropped by to see the finished product and was emotionally moved to see what had been produced over the last couple of months by NPT communities and schools.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council Ali Thomas commented “It is incredible to see just how much hard work has gone into making so many wonderful creative textile pieces. Once again our communities and schools have rallied to the challenge asked of them. I would like to say a big thank you to the dedicated sewers that have given up their Sunday to be part of this great, fun community occasion. Without their involvement this event just could not have taken place. NPT Cultural Services Officers have once again been successful in involving all our communities and schools in another exciting NPT Community Arts event.”
