News that Aberbechan bridge is soon to be reopened has been greeted with relief by residents and commuters alike.
Russell George, Montgomeryshire’s Conservative Assembly Member, was delighted to join Newtown Councillors Frank Torrens and Peter Harris in announcing that the bridge, which has been closed since 6 January 2011, is soon to be reopened. The bridge is popular with drivers keen to avoid the miles of tailbacks caused by Newtown’s disastrous traffic light system.
Mr George announced on 27 January 2011 that funding had been found to repair the damaged bridge, but the works have taken considerably longer than expected.
The bridge will be closed again temporarily over summer 2012 for final repairs to be made.
Commenting, Cllr Torrens noted: “I have been in constant touch with the Highways Agency to bring the work forward sooner, but various sectors have been involved and the repairs have been affected as a result.
“Now, after many months of inconvenience to many motorists and residents in both my and Cllr Harris’ wards, at long last we have lift off. The bridge should be open from next week.
“To secure the safety of the bridge they are installing a metal barrier to protect the stonework, and a traffic light system to improve safety.
“I have been in regular touch with the police about speeding on Canal Road, which a number of my constituents are concerned will increase with the reopening of the bridge. It is vital that they act accordingly on this vital safety situation.”
