Aberystwyth RNLI lifeboat assists divers caught in rip tide

The Aberystwyth RNLI lifeboat was called out at 7.15pm on Sunday 11 April 2010 to assist three divers who were in difficulty near Castle Point, Aberystwyth. A party of five divers had been enjoying a late afternoon recreational dive near the Castle Rocks when the group became separated.

When they surfaced, two of the divers were able to make their way to the beach, but the three others, two men and one woman, found that they were caught in a rip tide and being dragged away from the shore. They set off an inflatable distress float, to indicate that they were in difficulties, and their friends on the shoreline alerted Milford Haven Coastguard who called out the lifeboat.

As the incident took place very near to the lifeboat station, the lifeboat was on scene within a few minutes, and was able to pull the three divers on board and bring them back to Aberystwyth harbour. A Paramedic, who had been called to the harbour, checked the divers and found that they had suffered no ill effects from their ordeal.
