Accidents at busy junction lead to safety improvements

AccidentsSwansea Council has completed vital safety work at a busy junction after 14 accidents had taken place.

The accidents at Caerethin Cross near Penlan, in which 17 people were injured, occurred over a three-year period between July 2006 and July this year.

This prompted the Council to look at the causes and staff have now completed safety work by installing completely new traffic signals and remodelling the junction.

The design of the old junction meant that some motorists were taking chances with oncoming traffic when turning and it’s thought this was a factor in many of the accidents.

John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “Under the new system more traffic can now clear the junction on a green light and do this in a much safer manner as vehicles can exit the junction freely without conflicting with vehicles from opposite directions.

“Our priority is for the safety of motorists and pedestrians. The improvements will certainly increase the safety at the junction for everyone using it.”

The Council has confirmed it will monitor the new set-up closely to ensure traffic flows are managed properly and that traffic queues at the junction are kept as low as possible.

Cllr Hague said: “It may take some time for motorists to get used to the new system. We are doing all we can to ensure traffic moves freely through the junction and I hope motorists will be patient during these early stages of operation.”
