Action packed adventures on offer for Swansea youngsters

An action packed open day at Penyrheol Leisure Centre will see youngsters trying their hand at everything from wall climbing and mountain biking to street soccer and scuba diving.

The Adventure Open Day on June 27th is part of a series of events throughout Swansea offering children the opportunity to try the range of cool sports with qualified instructors.

Funded by Sport Wales they are a fantastic opportunity for young people to sample adventure sports.

The Penyrheol event will include free taster sessions in the swimming pool and in the leisure centre.

Although it is primarily aimed at 11 to 17 year olds, there will be activities for the rest of the family to enjoy too including free health checks and a bouncy castle.

At the swimming pool youngsters will sample kayaking, scuba diving, lifesaving, and have a go on the Challenger Inflatable. (Pool activities must be booked in advance).

On dry land the Centre will be offering skate-boarding (own board required) orienteering, street soccer, climbing on the rotating wall, mountain biking, tag rugby and a zumba fitness class.

There is also an Aquathon being held in the pool 9am – 12noon prior to the event which is open to both participants and spectators.

Dave Osborne, Leisure Operations Manager at the City and County of Swansea says “These Community Adventure Days will provide an excellent opportunity for youngsters across the city to enjoy sports they may not have tried before, and we look forward to seeing a good turnout.”

Other Community Adventure Days include:  Cefn Hengoed Leisure Centre (3 July), Morriston Leisure Centre (11 July), Penlan Leisure Centre (1 August), Elba Sports Complex (5 August), Park Williams (12 August) and finally Victoria Park (19 August).

Qualified coaches and support workers from the Council’s Sports and Outdoor Activity teams, Youth Service, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Communities First are all working together to promote and deliver the activities.

Katharine Rowe, Out of School Activities Manager says “Our feed back from young people has consistently said that they would love to try out adventure sports if they were easy to get to.
