As Chair of the Cross Party Group on Faith, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed today’s Welsh Government announcement of an action plan to address some of the challenges faced by historic places of worship.

The Minister for Natural Resources, Culture and Sport has issued a Written Statement stating that Cadw is to develop a detailed action plan, in collaboration with stakeholders, which will help guide those responsible for places of worship in Wales to plan sustainable futures for their buildings.

Darren said:

“Wales has an abundance of amazing places of worship and it is crucial that we ensure that their futures are protected and preserved. I therefore very much welcome this action plan and particularly welcome the fact that it will recognise that public engagement is vital to sustaining historic places of worship and raising awareness of their value and that encouraging participation in their care will be key priorities of the plan.

“There is already a good deal of community activity focused on faith tourism, but involvement of local communities is also vital in maintaining, conserving and sustaining buildings for the future.

“Place of worship are an important part of our community and attract thousands of visitors each year. Figures from Visit Wales show that places of worship are among the most visited visitor attractions in Wales, so it is vital that we look after them.”
