All clear for Vale beaches

s7The Vale of Glamorgan Council has welcomed the news that the four designated bathing waters in its area all passed mandatory water quality standards in the current year.

The Vale bathing waters at Jackson’s Bay, Whitmore Bay and Cold Knap (Barry) and Southerndown (pictured, image (C) Sean Bolton) were among 81 across Wales which passed the mandatory bacteria standards set by the European Council Bathing Water Directive.

The council, in conjunction with Environment Agency Wales, take regular water samples for non-designated and designated sites between 1 May and 30 September.

Vale Council cabinet member for legal and public protection Cllr Hunter Jarvie said: “We are delighted that, once again, our very popular local beaches continue to meet these high water quality standards.

“The council continues to work with Environment Agency Wales and Welsh Water to ensure that the bathing water quality standards are maintained at the highest possible level, and that includes identifying any areas of concern needing to be addressed.”

Andrew Johnson, environment manager at Environment Agency Wales, added: “Our teams continually advise and regulate to make sure we maintain bathing water quality. Our monitoring staff also work hard throughout the season to take the samples required for the Bathing Water Directive.

“Working with the Vale of Glamorgan Council helps us to maintain the quality of our coastal waters for people and wildlife.”
