AM – Let’s Work Together on Firestone

Labour AM for Wrexham, Lesley Griffiths has issued a call for Wrexham Council and the Welsh Government to work together on ‘ambitious’ plans to boost the towns economy.

The comments follow an update on Tuesday on the nest stage of plans for Enterprise Zones in Wales from Minister for Business, Enterprise, Technology and Science, Edwina Hart.

Though Wrexham was not part of the second round of schemes announced, the Minister indicated her officials were working with the Council on other plans for the area.

In response, Lesley Griffiths AM has highlighted plans for the ‘Firestone’ site on Wrexham Industrial Estate as pivotal  to boost jobs and growth for Wrexham.

AM Griffiths said:

“Although an Enterprise Zone for Wrexham was not part of this week’s announcement by the Minister, the statement did highlight the great potential there is in Wrexham.

Wrexham has an attractive skills base, a cutting edge university and a healthy mix of industry and business services on the doorstep.

“I believe there is good scope for the Welsh Government and Wrexham Council to work together on developing a tailored project to promote jobs and growth in the area.

“The Firestone site at Wrexham Industrial Estate is a large area of prime multi use-land owned by the Welsh Government in the town, which could accommodate the kind of ambitious project needed to attract jobs and industry to Wrexham.

“In addition, recent Welsh Government funded improvements to the Industrial Estate link road mean that the infrastructure around the Firestone site will be second to none in the near future.

“I look forward to talks between Wrexham Council and the Welsh Government over the coming months on future plans at the Firestone site, which I believe has the potential to compete with anything in the UK in terms of  attracting new businesses to the area. “
