AM Bates backs carers week

Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has given his support for Carers Week 2010, which sees over 100,000 carers taking part in activities across the UK and highlights the importance of supporting carers who often miss out on things that others may take for granted.

‘A Life Of My Own’ is the theme for Carers Week 2010, which runs from June 14-20.  It aims to highlight why supporting carers is so crucial, how carers miss out on things we all take for granted and what needs to be changed to offer carers more support.  Over 100,000 carers will take part in over 12,000 events and activities that have been notified by local partners; more than ever before.

Commenting, Assembly Member Mick Bates:

“As someone who was a young carer myself, I know how incredibly challenging and demanding it can be and too often when caring for someone you forget about the need to look after yourself too.

“Carers Week reminds us of the incredibly valuable work that carers do every day, offering their time and energy without question to support individuals and families.  The theme ‘A Life Of My Own’ encourages carers to talk about everyday things that they may miss out on, which all too often we take for granted.

“It is also a reminder to carers that their work is crucial and so deeply appreciated and not to be afraid, when carers in turn need support, to reach out to friends and family who are there to help.”
