Students from Welshpool High School have been inspired to get fit and take part in more sports as part of the run up to this year’s Commonwealth Games with a special visit from some Team Wales hopefuls.
Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George, congratulated the school on becoming one of just five in Wales to secure a visit from a Team Wales Commonwealth Games hopefuls as part of Sport Your Trainers Day on Monday, 10th March 2014.
Women’s bowls duo Hazel Wilson and Caroline Taylor visited the school on Monday to take part in a special PE lesson as part of the event.
Sport Wales Young Ambassadors and the school came up with a plan to get pupils, staff and the local community to take part in sport. And their idea of a Commonwealth Games inspired PE lesson won them a special place in the Sport Wales competition.
“It’s great to see pupils from Welshpool High School inspiring their peers and the local community to take part in more sports. Their idea of a Commonwealth Games inspired PE lesson secured their place as just one of five schools in Wales to receive a Team Wales hopeful,” said Mr George.
“I congratulate them on their initiative and I hope the pupils, staff and local community are inspired to take part in more sports to help keep fit and to have fun. It’s great to see one of our schools leading the way in Wales.”
Sport Wales Chief Executive Sarah Powell said: “Every year we see the schools of Wales, led by our Young Ambassadors, organising activities to encourage youngsters in their areas to be active as part of Sport Your Trainers day, I am delighted that this year we were able to bring some of our top athletes to these events to help inspire communities right across Wales.”
