AM Criticises Rape Poster

Plaid Cymru’s Leanne Wood has condemned a South Wales Police poster which urges women to “drink sensibly” to lessen the risk of being a victim of rape.

The AM for South Wales Central also said the poster should be withdrawn immediately.

The poster says: ‘Rape.  Don’t be a victim, drink sensibly. Alcohol features in two thirds of all rapes.’

Ms Wood, who is also the chair of the board of trustees at Cwm Cynon’s Women’s Aid, said:

“It is completely wrong to suggest that women who have been drinking are responsible if they are raped.  Rapists are responsible for rape. It really is as simple as that.

“This poster campaign is dangerous and I have called for an urgent meeting with the Welsh Minister responsible for equalities so that she can contact South Wales Police to press for their immediate withdrawal.

“It’s little wonder that so many women are reluctant to make a complaint of rape or that conviction rates are so low when they see this sort of attitude from the people charged with policing this heinous crime.”
