Mohammad Asghar has expressed doubt over the Welsh Government’s commitment to opening the long-delayed direct rail link between Ebbw Vale and Newport.
In a written question to the Local Government and Communities Minister, who now carries responsibility for transport, Mr Asghar asked what steps were being taken in relation to opening the rail link.
In his response, the Minister said he was “considering” his transport priorities and would “consider” the scheme following the publication of a feasibility report from Network Rail.
Mr Asghar said: “A direct rail link is crucial. For too long, people across South East Wales have endured excuses from the Welsh Government.
“The previous administration announced in September 2008 that the service would be fully operational for the 2010 Eisteddfod and Ryder Cup. The delays are staggering.
“The Minister has said he will ‘consider’ this rail link once a feasibility study is published by Network Rail. I hope he will consider it favourably – as a direct rail link is so important for our traders and businesses”.
