Plaid Cymru’s South Wales Central AM Chris Franks has welcomed news that more grit is being provided to some local councils in the wake of the freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall of the last few days.
Ieuan Wyn Jones, Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport, issued a written statement yesterday which said: “The Assembly Government is providing some local authorities with additional salt supplies for use on parts of the trunk road network that they maintain on our behalf. This means they will now have more salt for use on local roads.
He also said the Assembly Government would be liaising with salt suppliers to assist in the prioritisation of deliveries to local authorities.
Mr Franks said: “There has been a huge effort to keep the trunk roads of Wales moving following the large amounts of snow and ice that have fallen and formed over the last few days. Gritting staff have been working tirelessly to this end.
“The extra salt supplies that have been given to some local authorities by the Assembly Government will hopefully ensure greater coverage in areas where stocks are dwindling. With the cold snap set to last for up to ten days, councils will need to keep on top of things to ensure their roads stay open and safe for motorists.”
