AM Questions Plaid Candidate Selection

jeffCuthbertLabour AM Jeff Cuthbert has questioned Plaid Cymru’s selection of Lindsay Whittle as the party’s candidate in Caerphilly for the next Welsh General Election in 2016.

Mr Whittle was selected by Plaid earlier this month despite currently sitting as a regional list Assembly Member for South East Wales – based in Pontypool – as well as being a councillor on Caerphilly County Borough Council.

Jeff Cuthbert AM said: “At least this time the nationalists have chosen a candidate that can be solidly identified with the cause of Welsh independence. But we do need some clarity about Lindsay Whittle’s intentions. Currently he sits in the Assembly as a regional list Member for South East Wales. So will he give a firm and clear commitment now, that he will not put his name forward for both the Caerphilly constituency and the Regional List?

“I have never sought to get elected through the Regional List system.  My sole focus is the people of the Caerphilly constituency. Will Lindsay Whittle commit to standing in Caerphilly only, or will he try taking two bites at the cherry?”
