AM Shows Her Support for Striking Workers

Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood backed workers from the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union during a rally outside the Senedd yesterday.

Leanne, who is chair of the cross-party PCS group in the Welsh Assembly, spoke in front of around 100 people following a demonstration timed to coincide with Alastair Darling’s Budget announcement.

This is the third day of strike action for the union this month in response to the UK Government’s attempts to reduce their redundancy rights without consultation.  Thousands of public sector workers are expected to be made redundant over the next few years while the UK Government attempts to reduce its borrowing.

Assembly Members from Plaid Cymru have refused to cross the picket line outside the National Assembly during the strike.

During her speech, Leanne said it would be utterly wrong for the lowest paid workers to be punished for the mistakes of the wealthy banking elite who are responsible for much of the UK’s spending deficit.  She added that she was proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with members of the PCS union on the picket line.

After the rally, Leanne met with Adrian Curtis who is the co-ordinator for the Trussell Trust’s Food Bank network in Wales to discuss potential sources of funding for the project.
