Amazing Autumn Art lectures

A series of fascinating lectures and talks on art will be delivered this autumn at National Museum Cardiff as part of celebrations following the opening of the National Museum of Art featuring six new contemporary galleries in July. Acclaimed international academics will be giving evening lectures at the Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre held in partnership with national fundraising charity, the Art Fund, and an interesting series of free lunchtime talks will be given by staff members, artist and guests.

On Wednesday, 2 November, 6.30pm join Professor Ann Sumner, Director of The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham for her lecture on Public and Personal: the two aspects of Thomas Jones Work and Life. Ticket Price £10 / cons £8 includes lecture in the Reardon Smith Theatre followed by a glass of wine and private view of the Historic Galleries.

Professor Richard Thomson, Watson Gordon Professor of Fine Art, University of Edinburgh will talk about Visions of Venice: Monet and his rivals on Wednesday 16 November at 6.30pm. Ticket price £5 / cons. £4

Francis Bacon’s Study for Self-Portrait (1963): looking back to Degas will be delivered by Martin Hammer, Reader in History of Art, University of Edinburgh on Wednesday 30 November at 6.30pm Ticket price £5 / cons. £4

Tickets can be booked through the Art Fund on 0844 415 4100. Doors open at 6pm, all lectures start at 6.30pm. A limited number of tickets will be available on the door (cash only). Entry will be through the Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre entrance on the side of the Museum on Park Place.

There are also a popular series of free Friday lunchtime talks on the new contemporary art galleries throughout autumn. Places are limited, book on arrival at the Information Desk.

Photographer David Hurn (pictured) talks about Keith Arnatt, ‘A Real Photographer’ on 7 October at 1pm.

To mark the centenary of Josef Herman’s birth a special lecture From Warsaw to Wales and Beyond. The Art and Life of Josef Herman will be delivered by Dr Monica Bohm-Duchen, Freelance writer, lecturer & exhibition organizer on Friday 14 October at 1pm.

Common Culture is an artist’s group comprised of Mark Durden, David Campbell and Ian Brown. Mark Durden, Professor of Photography at Newport discusses their work with reference to their new installation in the Museum on Friday 21 October at 1pm.

Beth McIntyre, Curator Prints & Drawings, Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, who has put together the events said, “We’ve got a fascinating series of lectures and talks this autumn and if you haven’t been to see the new contemporary galleries yet, this is the ideal time to do it. There are many fascinating stories to tell through the work of the artists and these talks are a great way to learn and find out more about the works we have here in the National Museum of Art.”
