Regional AM Suzy Davies has hailed Swansea Council’s decision to reassess their mixed cycling and pedestrian policy.
Mrs Davies said: “There have been a number of high profile incidents involving cyclists and pedestrians recently, so clearly the current mixing of cyclists and pedestrians on paths without dividing markers is not always working”
Swansea Council have followed guidance from Sustrans Cymru which advises that, if a path is used by less than 100 people per hour, no dividing line is put down between cyclists and pedestrians.
Mrs Davies the Welsh Conservative AM for South Wales West, went on to say: “There are a number of places, most notably along Oystermouth Road between Singleton Park and the university entrance, that appear to have many more than 100 people per hour.
“I am pleased that the council have listened to the views that residents have raised with and they are now going to carry out a full and proper count into the number of people using the pathway along Oystermouth Road.”
Mrs Davies, who is also the Shadow Minister for Equalities at the Assembly, added: “I recently met with the Royal National Institute for the Blind and they are coming across cases where a lack of non-visual markings, such as textured lines, to divide cyclists and pedestrians is a real hazard.
“Thankfully Swansea Council have agreed to carry out the count in Autumn this year when the paths will be at their most busy after students have returned for their studies.
“I hope that, once the council have completed their count, they will act quickly to make sure the paths are safe for everyone to use.”
