Another Milestone for Access Road

Construction work on the Wrexham Industrial Estate Access Roads Scheme reached another milestone this week, when the bridge beams were placed on the new Tarmac Quarry access road bridge at Holt Road, part of the northern access road.

This is a key activity in taking works forward as completing the new bridge will allow the new section of dual carriageway A534 Holt Road to be completed between the Holt Road Roundabout and the new Gourton Hall Roundabout.

This week is Week No 39 of the 66-week construction period, which began on 16th May last year.

Work remains on programme to complete the civils works by the due date for completion in August this year.  In fact, the southern section – from Cross Lanes to Five Fords – is on programme to be complete well ahead of the due date, with the northern section also slightly ahead of programme.

The scheme, funded by Welsh Government, is also currently within the budget.

Cllr David Bithell, Lead Member for the Environment and Transport, said:

“The progress to date is excellent and I know everyone is looking forward to the benefits this improved access will bring to employers and organisations on the Wrexham Industrial Estate.”

The Industrial Estate Access Roads Scheme comprises two distinct access roads.

First, the northern route, which runs from Borras roundabout in the north to Bryn Lane roundabout in the south, where it connects with the Estate’s ring road adjacent to the JCB factory.  This route is approximately 3.2km or 2 miles long and is dual carriageway all the way.

Second, the southern route, which rums from A525 at Cross Lanes in the south to the Estate at Five Fords.  This route is approximately 1.2 km, or ¾ mile long and is single carriageway, except for the short section between the two proposed Five Fords roundabouts.

The Main Works Contractor is Birse Civils Ltd.  Birse Civils’ design partner is Gifford, part of Ramboll.

Since October last year, all A534 Holt Road traffic has been temporarily running on what will eventually become a combined footway, cycleway and agricultural access, enabling the current work on the permanent dual carriageway A534 to be carried out without traffic.

Completion of the Tarmac Quarry access road bridge will allow this key element of the northern route to be completed.  Road users and residents in the Holt Road area will have seen the earthworks for this section progressing well over the last few months.
