Appeal for information after death of 60 year old man, Broad Street, Newport

Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the discovery of the body of a 60 year old man in Broad Street, Newport at approximately 4am on Saturday morning (August 20th).

The man was pronounced deceased by paramedics at the scene. Police believe the 60 year old was subjected to a serious assault and whilst lying in the road, may have been hit by a vehicle.

Officers are supporting the family of the deceased at this time.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Broad Street, Pill and surrounding area, either on foot or travelling in a vehicle, between the hours of 2am and 4am this morning to contact them as a matter of urgency.

Police have arrested a number of people in connection with the investigation. Four people (two men, aged 22 and 44 and two women aged 18 and 46) all from the Newport area have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless and inconsiderate driving and failure to report a road traffic collision. One man aged 19 from the Newport area has been arrested on suspicion of murder. All five are in custody at this time.

The investigation is developing and ongoing. The area is cordoned off and house to house and forensic enquiries are being carried out.

Police are working closely with and are grateful to the local community who have been helpful and supportive.
